In a phone call, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan informed U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Ankara would not permit the Kurdish militant group YPG to find refuge in Syria, according to a ministry spokesperson. While Turkey views the YPG as a terrorist organization, the United States and other Western nations provide support to the group.
During the discussion, Blinken emphasized the importance of backing a Syrian-led political process that “upholds human rights and prioritizes inclusive and representative governance,” according to a statement from the U.S. State Department.
Blinken and Fidan also addressed measures to enhance the security of both Turkey and Syria against terrorism, the U.S. State Department’s statement added.
